Pediatric Urologist

Dr. Pham grew up in Arlington Texas and obtained his bachelor degree in biology at The University of Texas at Arlington. He then moved to Houston and attended The University of Texas Medical School at Houston where he received his medical degree. He stayed on at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston where he completed a residency in General Urology. He later pursued a fellowship in Pediatric Urology at Texas Children’s Hospital. Dr. Pham ultimately joined Memorial Hermann Medical Group at the Vanguard Urologic Institute and built the Pediatric Urology Program that currently exists at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital. He was Chief of Pediatric Urology at Vanguard Urologic Institute prior to leaving for private practice. He was a clinical assistant professor of Pediatric Urology at University of Texas at Houston. He is Board Certified in both Adult and Pediatric Urology.

Dr. Pham is passionate about caring for children with urologic issues. He never settles for the status quo and believes that surgical techniques can always be improved. As an example, he uses 3-D modeling to simulate the surgery. This allows him to assess innovative methods which can lead to shorter surgical time, create better cosmetic outcomes, and result in less pain for his patients. He also utilizes laparoscopic as well as the daVinci robotic system to perform surgeries when indicated. As a testament to his skills, Dr. Pham has performed almost 500 surgeries in the last year alone. The majority of his patients are under the age of 1.

Dr. Pham is the only Pediatric Urologist in the Houston who consistently performs the majority of his surgery for babies under a spinal block, which cuts out the need for general anesthesia. Please read the section on spinal block for more details about what can be offered for your child.

Dr. Pham is also adept at empowering parents and caregivers to provide the utmost care for their child. He spends time with each family explaining the pathology and surgical steps. He truly believes that parents’ comfort and trust in their surgeon to be as valuable as the technical aspects of the surgery. Hence, he is adamant on spending as much time as needed with each and every single family over every minute detail of the surgery so that all their questions and concerns are addressed. He wants the family to leave the consultation with a complete understanding of their child’s urologic issues.

Dr. Pham is a big proponent of delivering an excellent outcome. He truly believes outcomes have a strong correlation to surgeon experience and skills. He thinks surgery should always be done right the first time. He specializes in all realms of Pediatric Urology and has a special focus on penile and genitalia reconstruction. He sees both adults and children for this. He performed about 400 penile and genitalia surgeries out of 500 surgeries just last year alone. He also performs over 1000 circumcisions per year. Dr. Pham uses a signature closure for his penis and genitalia surgeries that gives it a consistent natural and excellent cosmetic appearance.

Dr. Pham believes that anytime a parent(s) has a child who is undergoing surgery it can and will be a very stressful time. His approach is to make the parent(s) and patient feel comfortable from the very first time he meets them in clinic. He walks them through every step of the way whether the patient needs surgical or non-surgical treatments. He pays great attention to detail from the first incision until the very last suture is placed. He handles the tissue carefully, preserves every single possible blood vessel, and makes sure pain is controlled during and after surgery. He truly believes this is what gives rise to his low complication rate and high patient satisfaction.
